Originally, great kilts were made by pleating and draping a single length of woollen cloth around the body and fastening the ends at the shoulder with a brooch. The great kilt evolved over time, with various styles and techniques of wearing it. The belted plaid or great plaid (feileadh mòr), also known as the great kilt, developed in the 16th century from the earlier "brat" or woollen cloak (also known as a plaid) worn over a tunic called leine, which was also worn by the Gaelic Irish.
